Position Overview
Homestead NL is seeking a compassionate, motivated, and skilled Housing Specialist (HS) for a one-year contract position. The Housing Specialist supports individuals and families in securing and maintaining self-determined housing while fostering long-term housing stability.
This role combines direct participant support, housing navigation, landlord engagement, advocacy, and community collaboration. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of trauma-informed and anti-oppressive practice, demonstrate sound professional judgment, and excel at building meaningful relationships while maintaining appropriate boundaries.
The Housing Specialist works primarily within the emergency shelter system while also engaging with landlords, service providers, and community partners throughout the broader community.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with participants to develop and implement individualized housing plans.
- Conduct regular outreach visits within emergency shelters to provide housing-focused support and assistance.
- Build and maintain positive relationships with landlords, property managers, and community partners to increase access to housing opportunities.
- Support participants in securing and maintaining housing through ongoing follow-up and aftercare services.
- Advocate for participants as they navigate housing systems, income supports, and community resources.
- Assist participants with housing applications, documentation, and tenancy-related matters.
- Maintain accurate participant records, case notes, and data entry in accordance with organizational standards.
- Uphold high standards of ethics, confidentiality, and participant-centered care.
- Participate in team meetings, case consultations, and ongoing professional development.
Qualifications
- Experience supporting individuals experiencing homelessness, housing insecurity, and/or other intersecting challenges.
- Demonstrated knowledge of housing systems, landlord-tenant relationships, social supports, and community resources in St. John’s and surrounding areas.
- Strong communication, advocacy, crisis intervention, and conflict resolution skills.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a collaborative team environment.
- Valid driver’s licence and access to a reliable, insured vehicle.
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire).
- Current Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening (or willingness to obtain upon hire).
- Lived experience of homelessness or housing insecurity is considered a strong asset.
Position Details
- Full-time, one-year contract position
- Monday to Friday schedule
- Target start date: August 2026
- Annual salary: $60,000
